Jewelry Design & Metalsmithing – Responsible for instruction and development of curriculum for all levels of metalsmithing classes including graduate level courses.  Program is designed to give students essential skills in the areas of metalsmithing and small sculpture, and offers a wide range of materials, techniques, and creative methods for development of imagery and content.  Traditional techniques include soldering, fabrication, smithing, casting, chasing and repoussé, tool making, cold connections, enameling, powder coating, as well as the use of cross disciplinary approaches including installation, kinetic, and time-based media.

 

Additional Duties:  Written/visual support materials, lectures, studio organization, equipment maintenance, health and safety, student group exhibitions, documentation of student work, website maintenance, accounting, visiting artists, recruitment, grant writing, and contemporary practice.  Advisor for students in discipline, participation on student, department, and university committees, advisor to the Student Metal Arts Club, arrangement of fundraising activities, chaperone for conferences.

 

Additional Courses:

 

Basic Figure Drawing – Mid-level studio course focusing on rendering the figure using life models and anatomical references.  Assignments investigate the body through observation, studying elements of proportion, and diverse rendering techniques.  Students are encouraged to explore mixed media approaches and investigate elements of composition in multiple formats.

  

Anatomical Figure Sculpture – Mid-level studio course focusing on investigating the figure using anatomical structures and 3D modeling.   Projects incorporate rendering as an essential tool, studies in proportion, reproductions from 3D casts, using an armature, hand building techniques in clay, and surface applications.

 

3D-Design – Foundations level course focusing on three-dimensional design principles and the examination of form and space in contemporary practice.  Projects use a variety of media and construction methods including group projects, installation, and assemblage.


Small Works – Special Topics as an upper-level studio course investigating small-scale mixed media sculpture.  Techniques include hand building in clay, basic metalsmithing, woodcarving, MIG welding, mold making, and introduction to the figure.

 

Portfolio & Exhibition – Senior level course focusing on professional practice and preparation for senior exhibitions.  Topics include creating a website, resume, writing an artist statement, press release, cover letter, photographing work, postcard preparation, installation of work, gallery submissions, exhibition entries, shipping of work, and networking practices.
